You may not need one

Browsing gitlab.common-lisp.net and cloning any public repository over https need no account. You need one to open issues and merge requests, to join a project, or to host a project of your own.

Signing up, step by step

Spammers register accounts by the thousand wherever registration is open, so this one is not. The registration page sits behind a link that the admins hand out to people who ask.

   Ask for the registration link

   Fill in the form below. Your request reaches the admins' phones the moment you send it, and one of them mails you the link.

   If you are on IRC, there is also a bot: in #common-lisp.net on Libera.Chat (the web chat needs no client), say minion: registration, please?

   If you already have an account here, or sign in through GitHub, you do not need the link.

   Register

   Open the link and fill in the registration form. The same link is also what lets you sign in with a Google account for the first time.

   Turn on two-factor authentication

   Every account must use two-factor authentication; GitLab asks you to set it up at your first sign-in. Any authenticator app that speaks TOTP will do, and so will a hardware key.

   Join a project, or ask to host one

   To join an existing project, ask for access on its GitLab page; its owners are notified and can add you.

   To host a project, tell the admins with the form below. New accounts cannot create projects until an admin has said yes, again because of spam. Say what the project is, and whether you would like a group for it. Project hosting explains what you get.

Ask the admins

For the registration link, permission to create projects, a project group, a mailing list, or a problem with your account. Your request is logged, pushed to the admins' phones, and stays on their queue until one of them has dealt with it, so it cannot get lost in a mailbox.
